The essential requirement for straight pipe sections is 5D upstream and 3D downstream. This setup ensures the optimal performance and accuracy of the electromagnetic flowmeter.
The measurement principle of the electromagnetic flowmeter remains unaffected by the flow characteristics.
If turbulence and vortices are present in the non-measurement section of the pipeline (such as near elbows, tangential throttling points, or partially open shut-off valves upstream), they will not impact the flowmeter's measurement accuracy.
However, steady-state vortices within the measurement area will compromise the stability and precision of the readings.
In such cases, measures must be implemented to stabilize the flow distribution:
1.2. Pipeline-type Electromagnetic Flowmeter
2.1. Requirements for Straight Sections To mitigate the effects of vortices and flow field distortions, specific lengths for upstream and downstream straight pipe sections are mandated. Failure to adhere to these lengths will affect measurement accuracy. Alternatively, a flow straightener can be installed. It's advisable to avoid proximity to control and partially open valves.
2.2. Requirements for Process Pipes The flowmeter has stringent requirements for the upstream and downstream process pipes at the installation point. The inner diameter of these pipes must match that of the sensor, fulfilling the condition: 0.98DN ≤ D ≤ 1.05DN (where DN is the inner diameter of the sensor, and D is the inner diameter of the process pipe). Additionally, the process pipe and sensor must be concentric, with an axial deviation not exceeding 0.05DN.
2.3. Requirements for Bypass Pipes To ensure seamless maintenance and superior performance of the flowmeter, installing a bypass pipe is highly recommended. This is particularly crucial for managing heavily contaminated fluids and scenarios where cleaning the flowmeter without halting the fluid flow is necessary. a. Facilitates effortless maintenance of the flowmeter. b. Essential for handling heavily contaminated fluids. c. Enables cleaning of the flowmeter without interrupting fluid flow.
3. Installation Requirements for Insertion-Type Electromagnetic Flowmeters
3.1. Requirements for Straight Pipe Sections Inlet/Outlet Straight Pipe Sections: To ensure optimal performance, the inlet should be at least ≥ 10×DN, while the outlet should be at least ≥ 5×DN.
3.2. Requirements for Grounding Points For the most reliable operation of the instrument and to enhance measurement accuracy by avoiding external parasitic potentials, the sensor must be well-grounded with a grounding resistance of less than 10. (A dedicated grounding device is not required if the metal pipeline is already well-grounded.)
